Clemen Rubi Mandarins
ClemeRubi or prim 23 comes from a mutation of oronules, discovered around 1994 by Juan Navarro, in Loriguilla (Valencia), who granted the worldwide exclusive rights to its cultivation to AVASA, so its cultivation and marketing are not permitted without a licence; its commercial name is ClemenRubi.
There is not much data on its development. We know that the tree has intermediate vigour and its production is higher than that of the Oronules clementine, with the fruits being of larger calibre; it is very early, taking on colour in the first half of September.
It has a very attractive, intense reddish-orange colouring. The flesh is tender, with a good juice content and a pleasant flavour. Due to its early ripening, no skin treatment is needed.
It seems to present some problem of sun-scald; this has been observed in young trees, where the fruit appears to form on the outside of the tree. To avoid this problem, what we do is develop the foliage as much as possible to cover the fruit.
We must encourage its leafiness as much as possible, so that pruning will be light, opening up the centre somewhat and removing old and yellow branches.
