Air Fresheners and Decorations with Orange

['LONG-LASTING POTPOURRI'] - ['It is always pleasant to add orange peel to a homemade potpourri. You can use small pine cones, dried seeds or flower corollas such as cloves, cinnamon, sandalwood sprigs, bay leaves, rosemary, thyme and lavender, to add to a small amount of ready-made potpourri or to revitalise a mixture that has lost its aroma. Place all your ingredients in a polythene bag, adding a little powdered orris root (Florentine iris), if you can find it, and sprinkle with 4 to 6 teaspoons of salt to act as a preservative, especially for the orange peel. Close the bag tightly and stir it well, leaving it in a dark place for a week and shaking it every day. Place the mixture in a bowl and stir it frequently so it gives off the fragrance.']

['PEEL GARLAND'] - ['Peel several oranges in a spiral in fairly wide strips, carefully so they do not break, so that the peels curl up naturally. With a large needle and strong thread, make a knot at one end of the thread. Roll up the peel in a not too tight spiral and then pass the threaded needle through the centre of the spiral. Thread all the spirals you want, leaving a good amount of thread untied. Put them in a plastic bag and sprinkle with a little cinnamon and a teaspoon of orris root. Close the bag tightly and shake it well, leaving it in a dark place for a week. To hang the aromatiser, you can make bows between the spirals and the ends of the thread; if you wish, add a few dried flowers held by the bow. Do not forget to make the knots at the ends of the threads when you have added all the bows and the peels.']

['ORANGE AND HERB POTPOURRI'] - ['This is a short-lasting aromatiser and a good way to use orange peels instead of throwing them in the bin. Peel an orange in a fine spiral. Put the peel in a polythene bag. Wash and dry a handful of rosemary and thyme and add them to the bag. Sprinkle with a few drops of eucalyptus essence and add a tablespoon of sunflower oil. Close the bag tightly and shake it well. Put the mixture in a bowl and place it in a warm room; if you put it near a radiator, its aroma will spread throughout the room.']

['ORANGE TEA LIGHT'] - ['Cut a shallow lid off the top of a large orange. Squeeze the juice, being careful not to break the skin, and remove the contents with a small spoon. If necessary, cut a strip from the bottom of the orange so it stays balanced. Use a small, sharp knife to cut a design in the side of the orange. Cut a hole in the centre of the orange lid, place a small candle inside it and light it, then put the lid back in place.']

['EXOTIC-SCENTED BATH SALTS'] - ['Mix the peel of an orange cut into thin strips with a handful of spiky rosemary leaves and another of lavender flowers in a polythene bag. Add a few drops of eucalyptus essence, close the bag and shake it well. Put between a third and a half of the mixture in a muslin cloth and immerse it in the bath water. Keep the rest for another time.']
