Biomass and the Paulownia
Its introduction in Spain is relatively recent compared with other forest species, so it will take time to be exploited commercially. However, all the good reputation that precedes it means that certain autonomous communities subsidise afforestation with paulownia for timber, electricity generation by biomass combustion, slope retention and soil improvement.
In 5 to 7 years it can reach a large timber size, reaching maturity at 25 years, at 30 metres tall, with a 1-metre trunk and a crown about 12 metres in diameter. The drying time is relatively short, 20 to 40 days outdoors. It generates a large amount of biomass annually, very useful for producing biofuel.
